SOUTHEASTERN CHAPTER NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL
Mission Statement
The purpose of the Alive at 25 program is to educate young drivers to adopt safer driving practices. This includes taking responsibility for their behavior in various driving situations, dealing with peer pressure and environmental distractions, having knowledge of State GDL requirements, and being aware of other general driving hazards. The Alive at 25 survival course zeros in on drivers between the ages of 15 and 24, the group most likely to be involved in fatal collisions. Instructors are off-duty law enforcement officers who delivers the program in one 4 ½ hour session, focusing on the behaviors and decision-making paradigms that are most commonly displayed by young drivers behind the wheel. Since South Carolina's program kicked off in 2007, the state's death toll among drivers 15-24 has dropped by 37%. This reduction is amazing, but one life lost is still one too many. The council developed the Zero Hero campaign to emphasize South Carolina's goal of Zero traffic fatalities among young drivers.
