SERGEANT THOMAS A SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION
Mission Statement
The Sergeant Thomas A. Smith, Jr Memorial Scholarship Foundation was established in 2021 after BART PD Sgt. Smith was killed in the line-of-duty on January 21, 2014. The Foundation was established as a non-profit organization and is exempt under IRS section 503(c)(3) - (EIN 87-3165498). The Foundation is part of the BPOA and BPMA's ongoing effort to improve the quality of the law enforcement profession in the Bay Area. The Foundation supports Sgt. Smith's belief that higher and continued education is a catalyst for change for individuals, families, and communities. The mission of the Sgt. Tommy Smith Foundation will support students who demonstrate academic achievement, have clearly defined goals, leadership, and the desire to give back to their communities. The Foundation provides financial scholarships to the dependents of active and retired BART Police Department members who have unselfishly served our communities.
