SAN MATEO COUNTY COMMUNICATIONS MANAGERS ASSOCIATION (SMCCMA) President: Elise Moeck Treasurer: Amanda Velasquez Vice President: Christine Granucci Secretary: Jackie Pace February 10th, 2016 Dear Public Safety Dispatch Supporter, To honor Public Safety Dispatchers, the week of April 10th through the 16th of 2016 has been set aside nationally as “Dispatcher Awards Recognition Week” in honor of the dedicated individuals who are the first to answer 911 emergency calls. The SMCCMA Executive Board requests that you sponsor San Mateo County’s Public Safety Dispatchers’ Week. Your generous donation will help us provide 15 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) within San Mateo County with the means to recognize their dispatchers. Your kind and thoughtful support of our local 911 emergency dispatchers will be recognized in a press release. Dispatchers are the unsung heroes of the public emergency response system. With composed, low-key voices, their tone of voice alone has a calming effect as they focus on getting the facts necessary to provide a fast and efficient response to any situation needing emergency services. Known officially as “Public Safety Dispatchers,” they administer life-saving instructions and assist citizens, or manage the emergency response to extraordinary events such as fleeing murder suspects, in progress residential burglaries, and the catastrophic explosion in San Bruno. Since 1981, the second week of April has been traditionally dedicated to recognizing the commitment of the men and women who serve as public safety communicators. First conceived by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass) introduced H.J. Res 284 in the mid-1990s, to broaden its recognition and impact by creating the “National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week.” Though the official name of the organization has changed several times over the years, its mission always has remained the same: “To promote the recognition and acknowledgement of the valuable role of the Public Safety Dispatcher,” thereby creating a safer and better world for all of us.
